Meet the Nesbitts

Ryan and Allison Nesbitt, along with their young children and Ryan’s family, own and operate Cedardale Farms Ltd., a large beef cattle and crop farm in central Ontario.

150 years of farming

The Nesbitt family has farmed in the same location for over 150 years.

Today, Cedardale Farms is 2,400 acres of land, which includes 180 cattle that are raised as breeding stock for sale, and a crop farm where they grow plenty of pasture for the cattle in addition to corn, soybeans, wheat and hay.

Taking great care of the animals and the land are top priorities for the Nesbitts. All animal care practices that speak to ethical behaviour and animal husbandry on their farm comply with the National Farm Animal Care Council’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle.

In addition to their animal care practices, for more than 20 years the Nesbitts have had a strict vaccination protocol in place, which optimizes the health of the animals and reduces the farm’s reliance on antibiotics.

The Cattleman’s Kind

There are a number of ways that the Nesbitts take care of their land:

  • A fully-implemented environmental farm plan and species-at-risk mediation plan

  • Intensive pasture management through a rotational grazing system, which means that the cattle are moved regularly to graze on one portion of pasture at a time.

  • Cattle are fenced out of the waterways and riparian zone

  • No-till and minimum tile practices are implemented in their fields

  • Utilize GPS technology to reduce excess spray used on the crops

In addition to their work on their farm, the Nesbitts are active members of their community working in healthcare and the banking industry, as well as volunteering with a number of local organizations from farming groups to figure skating!

Farming is their livelihood

The Nesbitts are passionate farmers and love what they do. Farming is their business and livelihood, but they are also quick to point out that they are consumers, too. They aren’t just selling their products to others, but are growing and raising their products safely for their own family as well.

The Nesbitts supply their exceptional cattle to Carve Premium Ontario Beef.
